I Need To Learn How To:

1.Hitch up a wagon.

2.Drive said wagon

3.Saddle a horse.

4.Cook full meals (not just pies).

5.Dress a wound.

6.Find water.

7.Shoot a gun.

8.Build a shelter.

9.Find out how Ande Mr. Berg feels about me.

She looked at the last item and frowned – shouldn’t it be at the top of the list instead of the bottom? After all, wasn’t that why she was making the list in the first place? Everything on her list had to do with staying in Clear Creek, and what made her want to do so was Mr. Berg. Her mother, for the most part, had decided to stay – for now at least – which meant she would undoubtedly become the new schoolteacher once the schoolhouse was built. But what if her mother suddenly decided she wanted to move on to Oregon City, or even back to New York? What then? Could she just go to work at Mr. Van Cleet’s hotel and expect her mother to go on without her?

Madeline shook her head to clear it. If she kept thinking about all this, it would only give her a headache. And she certainly didn’t want one of those. Enough of Mr. Berg! She could certainly wait to see him, and who knew what would happen then? She might get to know him and find she abhorred him! Besides, who knew if he planned on staying in Clear Creek? For all she knew he’d heal up and be gone, back to where he came from. Wherever that was… aside from Norway, of course …

“So pretty!”

Madeline looked up to see Cozette standing in front of her. She hadn’t even heard her come into the parlor! She really must stop thinking about And … grrr, Mr. Berg!

“Can you … teach me?” Cozette asked as she pointed to the embroidery on the table next to Madeline. She’d set it aside in order to make the list.

“Yes, of course. I’d love to,” she told her with a smile as she folded the list and tucked it in a pocket. “Would you teach me how to cook more things? I doubt I’d ever be as good as you, but I know I can learn.”

Cozette smiled and nodded before she said. “You could make more things to take to Mr. Berg!”

Madeline could only stare at her. Yes, Cozette had just spoken a full, uninterrupted sentence. But did it have to be about Mr. Berg? “That was excellent! But … I don’t know if I should make anything else for Mr. Berg. We aren’t going into Clear Creek anytime soon, and I don’t think anyone fancies walking into town.”

“My papa, he … can take us.”

Madeline’s stomach did a little flip. Oh, for Heaven’s sake!

“I make the cookies … for the … men. I want … to take some to Jefferson. You come along, yes?”

Madeline sat, speechless, and stared at Cozette like an idiot. Good grief, what was wrong with her?

“Madeline?”

At that point M. Duprie entered the room, or at least the smell of him did.
